Cue Preference in a Multidimensional Categorization Task

چکیده

Many natural categories vary along multiple dimensions. The present studies address two ma in questions underlying categorization with multiple dimensions. First, how well can humans perform in a categorization task consisting of five categories varying along nine continuously valued dimensions? Second, what are the properties of the cues preferred by humans if not all the available cues are used? Remarkably, participants not only learned to distinguish among the five categories, but they also learned to do so using only the relevant dimensions. A satisficing model of categorization was best able to account for participants’ responses. In addition, in a cue preference task, the results showed that nearly all participants preferred to use the dimension with the greatest variance when the number of dimensions available was restricted, in accord with predictions made by the satisficing model.

Designing and Evaluation of Reliability and Validity of Visual Cue-Induced Craving Assessment Task for Methamphetamine Smokers

A B S T R A C TIntroduction: Craving to methamphetamine is a significant health concern and exposure to methamphetamine cues in laboratory can induce craving. In this study, a task designing procedure for evaluating methamphetamine cue-induced craving in laboratory conditions is examined. Methods: First a series of visual cues which could induce craving was identified by 5 discussion sessions b...

Direct and Indirect Measures of Attention Indicate a Bias Toward Cues in Methamphetamine Users

Introduction:This study aims to investigate the attentional bias toward drug-related stimuli along with subjective craving after encountering such stimuli in methamphetamine users. Studies of cue reactivity have confirmed bias in attention and gaze to drug-related stimuli for most substances, but methamphetamine drugs are less studied by a direct measure such as eye tracking. Methods:Thirty ma...

Do children profit from looking beyond looks? From similarity-based to cue abstraction processes in multiple-cue judgment.

The authors investigated the ability of 9- to 11-year-olds and of adults to use similarity-based and rule-based processes as a function of task characteristics in a task that can be considered either a categorization task or a multiple-cue judgment task, depending on the nature of the criterion (binary vs. continuous). Both children and adults relied on similarity-based processes in the categor...

Inhibition of return in aging and Alzheimer's disease: performance as a function of task demands and stimulus timing.

Inhibition of return (IOR) is a phenomenon of spatial attention that biases attention toward novel events in the environment. Recent evidence suggests that the magnitude and timing of IOR varies as a function of task conditions (e.g., detection vs. discrimination tasks, short vs. long cue-target intervals, intrinsic vs. extrinsic cues). Although IOR appears relatively preserved with both normal...

Adult age differences in functional connectivity during executive control

Task switching requires executive control processes that undergo age-related decline. Previous neuroimaging studies have identified age-related differences in brain activation associated with global switching effects (dual-task blocks versus single-task blocks), but age-related differences in activation during local switching effects (switch trials versus repeat trials, within blocks) have not ...
